Country Comparison
UK and Canada are the two most established English-speaking nursing migration pathways from India. Both offer clear permanent residency routes, large Indian nurse communities, and structured career progression. The key differences are salary, licensing exam complexity, process speed, and where you want to build your long-term life.
United Kingdom
Canada
Our Verdict
UK is the right choice for nurses who want to migrate within 8-14 months at lower total cost, and who prefer structured NHS career progression. Canada is better for nurses willing to pass NCLEX-RN and invest 16-22 months in the process — the payoff is significantly higher salary, one of the world's fastest structured PR systems for skilled workers, and a family immigration model that settles your entire household simultaneously.
Salary Winner
Canada — significantly higher at CAD $62K–$100K/year vs UK Band 5-7 at £28K–£44K/year; after-tax gap is approximately ₹80K–₹100K/month more for Canada at mid-career levels
Migration Cost Winner
UK — ₹4L–₹7.5L total vs ₹6.2L–₹11L for Canada; UK migration costs are approximately ₹2L–₹3.5L less, primarily due to lower immigration fees and shorter process duration
Licensing Simplicity
Tie — UK requires OET/IELTS + CBT + OSCE (practical, UK-based); Canada requires NCLEX-RN (computer-adaptive, 50-60% first-attempt pass rate for Indian nurses); both have meaningful exam barriers but of different types
Family Settlement
Canada — entire family receives PR simultaneously under Express Entry; spouse gets immediate open work permit; PR-to-citizenship is 3 years (vs UK ILR after 5 years + 1 year for citizenship)
Long-Term Career
Tie — UK offers transparent NHS Band 5-8 progression and internationally recognised qualifications; Canada offers higher senior salaries, strong union-negotiated pay, and one of the world's best defined-benefit pension plans (HOOPP in Ontario)
Overall Recommendation
Choose UK if you need to migrate within 8-14 months at lower cost and prefer structured NHS career progression. Choose Canada if maximum salary, faster family PR, and long-term financial outcomes are your priority and you are willing to invest in the longer process and NCLEX-RN preparation.
Average Salary
Canada salary converts to ₹2.8L–4.8L/month after tax. UK Band 5 take-home is ₹1.9L–2.4L/month. Senior-level Canada salaries are significantly higher.
Total Migration Cost
UK migration is approximately ₹2L–₹3.5L cheaper, primarily because Canada immigration fees and settlement costs are higher.
Full Migration Timeline
UK is significantly faster. NCLEX-RN preparation (3-5 months) and Canadian immigration processing extend the Canada timeline.
Licensing Complexity
UK requires OET/IELTS, NMC CBT, and OSCE (practical, UK-based, ~60-65% first-attempt pass rate). Canada requires IELTS General for immigration, NCLEX-RN (computer-adaptive, ~50-60% first-attempt pass rate), and provincial nursing registration. Both have meaningful multi-step exam barriers.
PR Pathway
Canada PR is faster and more structured once you have Canadian work experience. UK ILR requires 5 years.
Family Settlement
Canada's Express Entry includes the entire family in one application. Spouse and children receive PR on the same day as the primary applicant.
Nursing Demand
Both markets are strong. Canada has a proportionally larger shortage with more active provincial recruitment streams.
Canada pays significantly more. A mid-career Canadian RN earns CAD $70,000–$85,000/year (approximately ₹3.0L–3.7L/month after federal and provincial tax). A UK NHS Band 5-6 nurse earns £28,407–£42,618/year (approximately ₹2.0L–2.9L/month after income tax and National Insurance). Senior Canadian nurses (10+ years) earn CAD $90,000–$110,000/year, well ahead of UK Band 7 at £43,742–£50,056. Alberta's zero provincial income tax makes net take-home even higher.
Both are challenging but in different ways. NCLEX-RN is a computer-adaptive exam (75–145 questions) that tests clinical judgment — first-attempt pass rate for internationally educated nurses is approximately 50-60%, and preparation takes 3-5 months with intensive study. NMC OSCE is a practical clinical exam conducted in the UK at 16 stations — first-attempt pass rate for Indian nurses is approximately 60-65%. The OSCE tests practical skills and communication in a British healthcare context, which can be unfamiliar. Many nurses find OSCE preparation more intuitive because it mirrors clinical practice, while NCLEX requires mastering a distinct exam methodology.
UK is substantially faster. The UK process takes 8-14 months: OET/IELTS preparation (2-4 months), NMC document verification (3-6 months), CBT (1-2 months), then OSCE after UK arrival. Canada's process takes 16-22 months: NCLEX-RN preparation and exam (3-6 months), provincial nursing college registration (3-6 months), Canadian immigration processing (6-12 months). For nurses who need to migrate quickly, UK is the clear choice.
Canada's PR pathway is faster and more structured. Under Express Entry, nurses in Canada with one year of skilled work experience can receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) and obtain PR within 6 months — the entire family is included simultaneously. UK Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) requires 5 continuous years of residence in the UK on a qualifying visa. While UK PR (ILR) eventually leads to British citizenship (after a further year), the Canada pathway is considerably faster for nurses who want to settle their family permanently.
Canada is better for family migration. Under Express Entry, your spouse and dependent children receive permanent residency on the same day you do — your spouse gets an open work permit on arrival and can work for any employer immediately. UK family migration requires separate dependant visas, and while your spouse can work freely, the family does not achieve permanent status until you receive ILR after 5 years. For nurses with school-age children, both countries offer free public education. Canada's large Indian nursing communities in Ontario, BC, and Alberta also provide strong social support networks for newly arrived families.
Both offer excellent long-term careers. UK NHS provides a transparent Band 5-8 progression structure, access to postgraduate education support, and internationally recognised qualifications. Canada's unionised nursing system offers annual increment increases, strong pension plans (HOOPP in Ontario being one of the best-funded defined-benefit plans globally), and high senior salaries. Canada's qualifications also give direct access to the US market if you wish to cross the border. Nurses who value structured career ladders and postgraduate support tend to prefer UK. Nurses prioritising total lifetime earnings and pension value tend to prefer Canada.
